Year 2 Wonder Dome Visit
How Space Works & The Solar System

You wouldn’t normally expect to be sitting on the floor of the school hall and find yourself staring up at all the stars and planets in our Solar System, but that is exactly what happened to Year 2 on Monday 25th September.
It was part of a visit by Steve from Wonder Dome, which saw a large inflatable planetarium appear in the school hall as an exciting part of our ‘Space’ topic.
As Steve explained, the Wonder Dome aims to give the children an idea of how space works, and introduce them to Earth’s place in the solar system. Each Year 2 class got the chance to see all the planets projected on the walls of the dome, accompanied by plenty of exciting facts and information. Some of the children felt as though they were actually going up to space in a rocket!
The children emerged from the dome, enthused about what they had seen, and showing a great deal of curiosity about the solar system. There were plenty of ‘wow’ moments, not least when they discovered that Mars has a mountain, Olympus Mons, which is nearly three times as high as Mount Everest!
The session was interactive, with plenty of opportunities to ask Steve questions. There is no doubt that the visit from the Wonder Dome excited the children and engaged them in their new topic and it has already inspired wonderful pieces of work.
