Computing

Intent

For the children at The Mead Infant and Nursery School, technology is becoming an ever-increasing integral part of day to day life. We recognise the potential that technology has for supporting, enriching and enhancing teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum. Our curriculum ensures that we equip our children as active participants in the digital world we live in. We aim to deliver a high quality computing curriculum which ensures that children become digitally literate.

Implementation

The Purple Mash scheme of work ensures a well-sequenced and comprehensive coverage of the computing curriculum. Lessons are organised into weekly units, typically with two units taught per half-term, making the curriculum both practical and engaging. These units cover a wide range of computing topics, including coding, spreadsheets, internet and email, databases, communication networks, touch typing, animation, and online safety.

Teachers are encouraged to follow the children's interests, ensuring that learning remains engaging, broad, and balanced. ICT and computing skills are integrated across core and foundation subjects, and where appropriate, incorporated into all areas of the curriculum. This approach ensures that computing capability is developed holistically.

Computing lessons are hands-on and varied, tailored to the judgement of teachers and the abilities of children. Pupils are encouraged to engage with ICT and technology outside of school, with each having a unique Purple Mash login and password. This allows them to store and save their work, and complete homework tasks that link with their current class learning.

Safeguarding is a key focus, with a strong emphasis on internet safety both inside and outside the classroom.

Impact

Our Computing Curriculum is designed to ensure high quality and thoughtful progression, building on and embedding current skills. As a result, children become increasingly proficient with school equipment and develop a strong, transferable understanding of online safety, which they apply in their daily lives.

Children gain a broad base of transferable knowledge that can be utilised on various similar platforms. This comprehensive approach ensures that children are well-prepared for the digital world.
