Oh No! Shark in the Snow!
To end the autumn term, the whole school worked on a shared reading and writing project based on Nick Sharratt’s new picture book “Oh No! Shark in the Snow!” To start off the event Nick Sharratt visited our school virtually. He read to the children “Oh No! Shark in the Snow!” and taught them how to draw some of the pictures from his other famous picture books.
In Reception, the children used story maps to learn “Oh No! Shark in the Snow!” off by heart. We also made our own telescopes and went on a shark hunt around school for our own version “How Cool! Shark in the School.” The children took photos of what they thought were sharks and then wrote their own stories.

In Year 1, the children rehearsed the story of “Oh No! Shark in the Snow!” We added our own actions and then created story boards. The children then changed an element of the story… Instead of a shark, Timothy Pope saw a jaguar that Santa helped return to the rainforest. All the children enjoyed writing out their own versions of the story with this transformed element.
In Year 2, the children were authors and wrote their own stories called “How Cool! Shark in the School!” They spent time learning about rhyming words and thought carefully about how they could make their own stories rhyme. The children planned and edited their work carefully before writing it up in their neatest handwriting using pens. Year Two loved being authors and were very proud of the stories they created.
